How to Prepare for Your First Sedation Dentistry Appointment

February 13, 2023

Are you dealing with dental anxiety and a bad tooth? You’ll want to see a sedation dentist in Short Pump. Whether you’re receiving sedation dentistry as a pain management technique or for your peace of mind, you’ll want to know what to do before walking in for your appointment. Preparing for your treatment ensures you’re ready for your time in the chair.

What You Should Do Before Your First Sedation Dentistry Appointment

Hydrate the Day Before Your Visit

Unless you’re receiving nitrous oxide sedation, your dentist will advise you to avoid drinking anything except water before your appointment. Besides helping prevent nausea, doing so ensures the sedative takes full effect. For this reason, it’s best to stay hydrated by drinking at least eight glasses of water the day before your appointment.

Empty Your Stomach

While nitrous oxide sedation doesn’t require special preparation, IV and oral sedation will require you to fast after midnight the night before your appointment. Although sedation can be a relaxing and enjoyable experience, some patients experience nausea. For this reason, it’s best to sit in the dental chair with an empty stomach.

Ask Someone to Drive You Home

Since the effects of IV and oral sedation take hours to wear off, you won’t be fit to drive after having dental work done. For this reason, it’s best to ask a relative or friend to drive you to your appointment and take you home afterward. Advise them to bring a phone charger or a book since the wait may take some time.

Wear Comfortable Clothing

Comfortable clothing plays a significant role in enjoying a long-term chair nap. Do yourself a favor by wearing something comfortable to sleep in for an extended period. Avoid wearing clothes with scratchy seams, binding waistbands, stiff fabrics, and high heels.
