3 Things You Should Know About Nitrous Oxide

August 23, 2021

Does dental anxiety stop you from getting the care you desperately need? Thankfully, sedation dentistry techniques can help you stay calm and comfortable in the dentist’s chair. One of the commonly used sedatives is nitrous oxide in Midlothian.

What You Should Know About Nitrous Oxide

People usually call it “laughing gas

Although nitrous oxide is also called laughing gas, it doesn’t actually make you laugh. It’s an odorless gaseous sedative that won’t put you to sleep while your dentist works on your teeth. Instead, you’ll still be able to communicate with your dentist throughout the procedure.

As the laughing gas takes full effect and puts you in a dreamlike state, you’ll feel a slight tingling sensation and a general numbness throughout your body. Since you won’t experience hangover effects to this type of sedative, you’ll be able to drive yourself home after your appointment. All in all, this odorless gaseous sedative will make uncomfortable dental procedures easier on you.

It’s easily administered

Laughing gas works well for patients who are terrified of needles because it doesn’t require an injection for administration. Instead, it’s breathed in through a mask fitted over your nose. Within two to three minutes, the sedative effect kicks in as the anesthetic is absorbed through your lungs.

If the depth of sedation is too much or too little, your dentist can easily make the necessary adjustments. Once the procedure is completed and the mask is removed, the effects will quickly wear off.

It’s safe when administered by a trained dental professional

When administered by your dentist, nitrous oxide is perfectly safe and won’t affect any of your major internal organs. However, it can have disorienting effects that last for three to five minutes if you stand too quickly after the mask is removed.
