Ways to Avoid Tooth Sensitivity

October 17, 2022

If your sensitive teeth stop you from enjoying a cold glass of milk or ice cream, you’re probably wondering how to reduce tooth sensitivity. While an endodontist in 23233 is an expert in pain management, they can address your discomfort and recommend several solutions you can try at home.

How To Relieve Dental Sensitivity?

Switch to a Soft-Bristled Toothbrush

While hard-bristled toothbrushes may help eliminate tooth stains, they can also wear out the protective layer that covers your teeth. Unless you decide to switch to a toothbrush with soft bristles, you’ll risk gum recession, nerve exposure, and increased sensitivity. Your soft oral tissues will thank you for using soft-bristled toothbrushes

Avoid Vigorous Brushing

Although the type of bristles you use for brushing teeth may reduce dental sensitivity, your manner of brushing can worsen your problem. Brushing too vigorously and even after switching to a soft-bristled toothbrush, can still cause significant damage to your tooth enamel. If you’re looking to reduce tooth sensitivity, be sure to brush gently, at least twice a day.

Use Desensitizing Toothpaste

Since enamel erosion exposes your teeth’s softer layer called the dentin, it triggers sensitivity to hot and cold foods and beverages. Using desensitizing toothpaste can help solve this problem because it contains active ingredients that temporarily fill the tiny holes in your enamel and dentin.

Rinse With a Salt Water Mouthwash

Salt water creates an alkaline environment in your mouth that reduces bacterial growth, plaque formation, and tooth sensitivity. You can make a salt water mouthwash by mixing two teaspoons of salt with a cup of warm water. Use it in the morning and at night until your dental sensitivity subsides.
