What Really Happens During a Root Canal Procedure?

February 2, 2024

Are you curious about what truly happens during a Short Pump endodontics procedure, commonly known as a root canal? You’re not alone!

Root canals are known to be mysterious and intimidating, but in reality, they are routine dental treatments aimed at saving your natural teeth and alleviating pain. We’re here to demystify the process so you can confidently approach it systematically.

What Is Endodontics?

Endodontics is a specialized branch of dentistry focused on the inner workings of your teeth, including the pulp and root canals. Endodontic treatment is necessary to preserve the tooth when the pulp becomes infected or inflamed due to deep cavities, cracks, or trauma

Root Canal Procedure

Diagnosis and Assessment

The journey of a root canal begins with a thorough examination by an experienced endodontist. They will assess the extent of damage using diagnostic tools such as X-rays. This initial step is crucial in determining whether a root canal is needed.

Cleaning and Shaping

The procedure begins once the diagnosis confirms the need for a root canal. Your endodontist will administer local anesthesia to ensure you’re comfortable throughout. Then, they’ll create a small access point in your tooth to reach the infected pulp. The pulp is carefully removed, and the canal is cleaned and shaped to remove any remaining infected tissue.

Filling and Sealing

With the canal cleaned and shaped, the next step is to fill and seal it to prevent further infection. Typically, a biocompatible material called gutta-percha fills the space, and the access point is sealed to keep out bacteria.

Restoration

After your root canal, your tooth will be more fragile, so restoring its strength and functionality is essential. This often involves placing a crown on the treated tooth, ensuring it blends seamlessly with your natural teeth.
