Unlike a root canal, an apicoectomy is performed on the tooth’s root. The dentist removes the infected tissue through access made in the apex of the tooth or the root tip. Next, the end of the root is sealed by a filling.
This procedure is used to treat an infection that has developed on a tooth that’s had a root canal procedure. Dentists recommend an apicoectomy if the tooth can’t be saved by means of a conventional root canal treatment.
