If the mere thought of your next dental checkup makes you feel nervous, you’ve probably considered sedation dentistry. Although dental sedation comes in various forms, the most commonly used method involves inhaling nitrous oxide in Midlothian.

Nitrous Oxide Facts You Should Know

What Is Nitrous Oxide?

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is an odorless, colorless, slightly sweet, and non-flammable gas. Since it typically induces a state of euphoria, it’s better known as laughing gas. Moreover, dentists use it to relieve pain (analgesic), reduce pain (anesthetic), and decrease anxiety (anxiolytic).

How Does It Work?

Since nitrous oxide is administered by inhalation, the dentist delivers it through a nasal mask or nosepiece. After inhaling the gas, you’ll experience its calming effects within three to five minutes. Furthermore, the dentist controls the level of sedation you receive by adjusting dosages as needed throughout the procedure.

As soon as the treatment is over, the dentist clears the remnants of the nitrous oxide from your system by flushing it with 100% pure oxygen. Since you’ll return to your normal mental state within three to five minutes after removing your mask, you should be able to drive yourself home or even go back to work after your appointment.

Will It Put Me to Sleep?

It’s important to note that nitrous oxide sedation doesn’t put you fully to sleep. You’ll still be able to hear and respond to your dentist’s questions and follow their instructions during treatment.

What Are Its Effects?

Since laughing gas is a depressant, it will slow your body down. Once its effects kick in, you may feel light-headed, relaxed, and mildly euphoric. Besides experiencing heaviness in your arms and legs, your limbs may also feel tingly.
